McQuaide Nantucket Home

This project was created in collaboration with interior designer Kaitlin McQuaide for a beautifully layered beach house in Nantucket. The design aimed to capture the spirit of the island without relying on obvious seaside clichés, nstead weaving together heritage materials, rich colours and subtle maritime references. For the kitchen, we were commissioned to create a series of custom hand painted tiles that would introduce a sense of history and craftsmanship while complimenting the character of the home.

Inspired by traditional Delftware, the tiles feature a collection of nautical motifs including ships and sea life. These small scenes reference the island’s maritime heritage while bringing a playful narrative quality to the backsplash. Each tile was painted by hand, allowing for slight variations that add texture and depth when viewed across the wall. The result is a surface that feels both decorative and authentic, grounding the kitchen in a sense of place while celebrating the tradition of handmade ceramics.

Within the space, the tiles sit alongside a striking blue range and softly painted cabinetry, creating a palette that reflects the colours of the sea and sky. The deep blues of the tile decoration echo the tones of the stove, helping to tie the elements of the kitchen together while providing contrast against the softer greys of the cabinetry. Rather than dominating the room, the tiles act as a gentle focal point, drawing the eye and adding character while supporting the layered design of the interior.

As with many of our projects, the aim was to create something that feels timeless and rooted in craft. In this Nantucket kitchen, the tiles contribute a sense of narrative and heritage, connecting the home to the maritime traditions of the island while adding warmth and individuality to the space.
